The Art of the Centerpiece: How to Match a Coffee Table with Your Sofa and Décor

    24 Aug 2026 - 12:00 AM

Here's something nobody tells you when you're furnishing a living room: the sofa gets all the attention, but the coffee table is what actually holds the room together. It's the piece your eye keeps drifting back to. Sit in any well-designed living room for five minutes and you'll notice it, low, central, quietly doing more work than it gets credit for.

We've watched this play out with client after client. Someone spends weeks picking the "right" sofa, then grabs whatever coffee table is on sale that weekend. And the room never quite clicks. Not because the sofa was wrong, but because nothing was tying it to the rest of the space. That's really the coffee table's job. It pulls your sofa, your rug, your lamp, all of it, into one picture instead of a collection of separate purchases.

So if you're at this stage, here's how we'd actually go about choosing one.

    Start With Measurements, Not Pictures

We know it's tempting to just scroll and pick whatever catches your eye. But measure first. Genuinely, this is the step that saves people from returns.

Leave 60 to 90 cm of clearance around your furniture. That's roughly enough for someone to walk past without turning sideways. We had a customer once who fell in love with a large marble table, gorgeous piece, only to realise once it arrived that she couldn't get from the sofa to the hallway without squeezing past it every single time. It went back within the week.

Height matters just as much. Your table should sit around the same level as your sofa seat, maybe a touch lower. Too tall and it feels like it's competing with the sofa for attention. Too low and you're bending awkwardly every time you reach for your tea.

Basically: measure your sofa before you fall for a table. The showroom lighting will lie to you about scale every time.

Shape Changes the Whole Feel of a Room

Rectangles and squares are the safe bet, and honestly, they're safe for good reason. They just work with most standard sofas and larger sectionals. Our Eterna Coffee Table is a good example, low, square, with a slatted storage compartment that keeps the top clear without adding bulk to the room.

But round tables deserve more credit than they get. In smaller apartments, a round or oval shape avoids that boxed-in feeling square edges can create. And if you've got toddlers stumbling around the house, rounded corners genuinely make a difference. Fewer sharp edges means fewer tears at bath time. If your room already leans modern with a lot of straight-line furniture, a round table breaks that up nicely too.

Materials Tell People What Kind of Home This Is

This is the part people underestimate. Walnut and ash bring warmth into a room almost instantly, they're the kind of wood that looks better after a few years, not worse. Marble and travertine lean more luxurious, a bit cooler to the touch, a bit more statement-making. Glass is underrated for small apartments specifically, because it doesn't visually "sit" in the room the way a solid top does.

Here's a small rule that actually helps: match materials with a little contrast, not perfect harmony. A leather sofa next to a timber table feels warm and grounded. A bouclé or velvet sofa, which already has a lot of texture going on, looks sharper next to something sleek, like metal or stone. Too much softness paired with more softness just looks flat.

Match the Table to the Style You're Already Building

If you're going for a modern look, stick with clean lines, black metal, marble tops. Keep it restrained.

Scandinavian interiors want light wood, oak or ash usually, kept simple. Nothing loud.

Industrial spaces do well with darker, raw timber next to black metal, especially alongside leather. It gives the room a lived-in, slightly worn character, even in a new build.

A Table Should Work, Not Just Sit There

Storage matters more than people expect until they have it. Our Idhaho table model has hidden storage built in, and it's the kind of feature you don't think about until suddenly your remotes, chargers, and magazines aren't all over the surface anymore.

The table also quietly decides how people sit when you have guests over. Pull a couple of armchairs up around it, and it becomes the actual centre of conversation, more than the sofa does, honestly.

It's an Investment, Even If It Doesn't Feel Like One

A coffee table isn't a small purchase, and it shouldn't be treated like one. It's something you'll look at every single day for years. Buying well means buying a piece that holds up, both in how it looks and how it functions.

If you're ready to look, the Classy Furniture coffee table collection has pieces built with exactly this kind of longevity in mind.

    Quick Styling FAQs

    1. Does the table have to match the wood of my chairs?

No, and honestly it's more interesting when it doesn't. Mixing walnut with ash, for instance, adds depth instead of looking too matched.

    2. Can I use a stool as a coffee table?

Yes. It's a great workaround for small apartments, and it can double as seating when you've got more people over than chairs.

    3. How do I choose a colour?

Neutrals, black, grey, tan, are the safest long-term bet. They let you change everything else in the room later without the table ever feeling out of place.
